5th National Convention on Health, Nutrition and Value Addition Of Indian MustardFebruary 5, 2003
Posted in: Uncategorized | Comments (0)
(PRWEB) February 12, 2003
Mustard Research & Promotion Consortium MRPC organized a one-day National Convention on 5th February, 2003 at India Habitat Centre Lodhi Road, New Delhi on Health, Nutrition and Value Addition Of Indian Mustard. Approx. 300 delegates attended the convention. The aim of the convention is to have threadbare discussion on health and nutrition aspects of indigenous mustard oil. The physicians, cardiologists, nutritionist and dieticians from India and abroad have participated in the conference and put-forth their recommendations and research outputs and came to the conclusion about superiority of mustard oil over other edible oils.
Mustard Research and Promotion Consortium (MRPC) strives to serve as a catalyst for growth and development of the Rapeseed-Mustard sector in India. It is a representative body of oil producers, agricultural scientists and oil technologists which monitors and assists in modernization of farm practices and oil processing, improvement in testing method and in building consumer confidence in Indias oldest and healthiest edible oil. MRPC is devoted to the cause of protection of interests of the rapeseed-mustard farmers and small scale oil producers. The organization focuses on actively promoting this valuable indigenous product through conventions and scientific workshops and carrying out meaningful research aimed at upgrading varieties, fatty acid related studies recommending improved technologies and conducting demographic surveys and dispelling prevalent myths and misconception about mustard and its allied products.
As mustard oil is the Indias own time tested edible oil and is also backbone of Indias edible oil economy. MRPC is striving its efforts to bring health experts, physicians, cardiologists, nutritionist, dieticians, mustard processors and policy makers on one platform so that they can exchange their views and their conclusive research output, which would help to popularize indigenous mustard oil and make efforts through research methodologies for its value addition.
The National Convention was inaugurated by Dr N K Ganguly, Director General, Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), New Delhi. Dr Narinder K Saini, Medical Director, Heart Disease Prevention Clinic, Ohio, USA delivered the keynote address. In his address, he said that we have changed our diet from ghee and mustard based oil to the refined oil based diet, thinking that refined oil which is nice and clear does not smell bad is better for our health. As a matter of fact, this was exactly what we were told, without really knowing that this change of oil base is actually a Killer for us. Shri S K Batra, Sr. Processing Technologist, Technology Mission on Oilseeds, Pulses & Maize, Ministry of Agriculture, Govt. of India, while delivering the conference theme said that Technology Mission on Oilseed Pulses & Maize (TMOP&M) has taken initiative to include mustard processing sector under its ambit for modernization purpose.
During the technical session, Prof S C Manchanda, Former Professor & Head, Department of Cardiology, All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi have spoken about the Lifestyle and heart disease in Indians by saying that diet has close relation to several disease like hypertension, diabetes, obesity, dyslipidemia (increased cholesterol) which all are risk factors for CHD. Increased fat consumption especially from fast food causes obesity. High intake of cholesterol (found only in animal products like egg, meat and milk) and saturated fats (found in butter, ghee, milk, cream and coconut oil) increased blood cholesterol which are harmful for heart. An oil with low saturated fats, high monounsaturated fats and n-3 polyunsaturated fats like mustard/rapeseed is considered good for heart.
Prof Rakesh Tandon, Former Professor & Head, Department of Gastroenterology, All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi had expressed his views and concluded that Mustard oil is an ideal oil.
Dr Madhulika Prakash, Director & Head (Food & Agri.), Bureau of Indian Standards, New Delhi have stated about the standards and different grades of mustard oil and she further added that mustard seed and mustard oil are more of ethnic foods, it is important to meet quality requirements so that the consumer gets a pure and quality product.
Senior Promoter of P Mark Mustard Oil Mr Vivek Puri stated that after having associated with Mustard Research and Promotion Consortium and its various panelists, we have realized that mustard crop and its derivatives has huge export and domestic potential in various disciplines like pharmaceuticals, textiles, automobile industry, lubrication industry etc. which remains largely untapped by the enterprises. This needs to be seriously explored, since India is one of the largest producer of mustard seed in the world. Also after hearing the views of eminent cardiologist from all over the world, we are convinced of the nutritional superiority of Kachhi ghani mustard oil over all other oils. We are very happy with the kind of promotion MRPC is doing in exploding myths and bring out true facts about mustard which is going to be beneficial to all the segments of the society which are connected with mustard.
Conclusively, Dr Ghafoorunissa, Dy.Director (Sr.Gr.), National Institute of Nutrition, Hyderabad recommended that mustard oil is the ultimate edible oil amongst all edible oils as it has right blend of n-3/n-6 polyunsaturated fatty acid and good amount of mono-unsaturated fatty acid which helps in reducing LDL (bad cholesterol). It also has very low amount of saturated fatty acid (Saturated Fatty Acid increases bad cholesterol).
Prof. D K Bhattacharyya, Chemical Technology Department, Kolkata University, Kolkata, expressed his views over value addition of mustard oil by saying that Extraction of different fatty acid from mustard oil amongst them erucic acid which is found in the range of 42-55% in Indian mustard can be utilized for various eco-friendly industrial applications, which is one of the biggest value addition in Indian mustard.
Dr Mayaram Unniyal, Director (R&D) Maharishi Ayurvedic products Ltd. Noida, briefed about the medicinal properties of mustard oil. He further added that the time tested indigenous mustard seeds and mustard oil can be used in ayurvedic system of medicines. Presently, it is being used for treating various ailments in the form of mustard plasters and as massage oil but the medicinal properties of mustard oil needs more exploration so that this valuable indigenous product can be saved from extinction.
Prof Pratap Chakraborty, Jadavpur University, Kolkata expressed his views regarding mustard protein. He said that mustard protein is good for human consumption and can be utilized for varied food products. Mustard cake which has high percentage of protein which is good source for human consumption. This protein can be exploited for varied industrial purposes.

Blueprint to Make Cities Work- Municipalika 2005
Posted in: Real Estate | Comments (0)
(PRWEB) March 30, 2005
The blueprint to make Indian cities work needs an integrated and holistic approach with partnership models. This was evolved in the three-day International Municipalika Exhibition and Conference 2005 concluded in the Capital today with 312 participants, including 52 Mayors and representatives from 80 cities across the country.
Organized by the Good Governance India Foundation, Municipalika 2005 with participation of National and International agencies, focused on participative models of infrastructure and township development, provision of adequate and Quality Water for All, Good Sanitation and Waste Management Strategies as well as using E-governance as the solution to Regular and Accountable Citizen Interfaces with Municipal Governments. The use of GIS/GPS and Remote Sensing Applications for city management was also discussed extensively at the three-day Conference.
The exhibition included 42 participants from agencies/enterprises ranging from Mechanical Road and Floor Sweepers, manufacturers of a range of Waste and Trash Management systems, manufacturers of pipes and accessories for water management, stainless steel fasteners and piping systems as well as innovative development practices. Environmentally sustainable products and services was another thrust area.
Good Urban Governance and Sound Financial Management were identified as the engines that would make Urban Local Bodies financially sound. Efficient Accounting Systems through an efficient property tax regime was also debated. New avenues for resource generation were also debated extensively by Mayors, City Managers and other professionals.
The need for Public Private Peoples Partnerships for Housing and Infrastructure with Citizen Participation in a big way has been behind the success stories in various Municipal Governments across the country. Success models shared included West Bengal, Hyderabad and Gujarats experiences. Kerala and Tamil Nadu shared their experience in successful community participation in delivery of services.
Environment issues affecting land, air and water were discussed with a clear message that development should not lead to disaster in the management of natural resources. Environment friendly, ecologically appropriate and energy saving technologies with appropriate options was a clear message.
Depleting water resources has become a threat to all cities. The problem of `shortage can rapidly develop into a `crisis if cities dont wake up to the alarm bells that have already started ringing in many cities. Only 10 per cent of the total water is used for drinking and kitchen use. However, city governments spend vast amount of resources in purification and treatment of water. Dual piping systems have been suggested as a solution.
Waste water recycling, water harvesting and aquifer recharging have also emerged as solutions to the depleting water resources problem. Many delegates expressed concern over the large losses in transmission and distribution and discussed methods of reducing losses in supply of water.
Domestic, medical and industrial waste management as well as harnessing waste to produce energy for local use has been discussed at the deliberations. Waste to Wealth through energy production, `refuse to `resource and `trash to `cash have been the emerging messages from cities.
To make sure that all services reach the doorstep of every citizen, e-governance practices are in various stages of implementation across the various municipalities. This includes solutions for billing, taxation, round the clock and anytime services as well. Remote sensing and GIS/GPS data for city management is an emerging solution.
City governance, development and management and utility providers with joint initiative with civil society could lead to responsive management to make cities work. There was a large number of participation from Residents welfare associations across the country.
There was a call to cities to share and replicate best practices in Urban Development, Management and Governance. The efforts of Good Governance India Foundation were widely recognized in sensitizing public opinion and participation on the crying development needs of Indian cities.

Consultancy Firms- New Age Slavery in U.S
Posted in: Real Estate | Comments (0)
(PRWEB) April 10, 2005
Murali Krishna Devarakonda loves America. He loves to talk about America – at length and with gusto. “You couldn’t ask for a better setup than what you have here. You have freedom of speech. You don’t have to be afraid,” said the 34-year-old software engineer from Hyderabad, India. But these days, Devarakonda spends more time talking about what he doesn’t like about America: the work visa program that he has, which he and many other foreign tech workers say makes them virtual slaves of their contract employers.
While many foreign-born engineers and programmers have indeed struck gold working in Silicon Valley — others have hit dead ends. They are employed by shady consultancy firms that pay them only when projects were available, leaving them with no income for months at a time.
There are numerous cases of Indian IT professionals exploited by recruitment companies or body shoppers.
This is the New Age Slavery that is now flourishing in US. More and more companies now entrust middle men called consultancies or body shoppers to employ people.
They are not just brokers between the companies and the employees but are in true sense the employers.
As per Hindustan Times, a leading Indian Newspaper, these are the steps involved with consultancy firms.
A software firm in Boston wants to hire 20 software professionals for a project.
1. They will contact a body shop in Pittsburgh.
2. The consultant will dig out some 200-odd resumes from his database and send them to this company
3. After shortlisting the resumes, the Boston firm will conduct interviews.
4. When the selection process is over, the body shop will confirm the list of candidates.
5. The candidates will start working for the software firm for that particular project and once the project is over they will again be jobless and will be on the mercy of these consultancy firms
How the money gets divided:
Lets assume the Boston firm suppose pays $ 70 per hour to the body shop. The candidate in turn will be paid approx $ 20-30 per hour. Which means, whenever there is no project, he is put on bench. That is when he software professional will not be billable to the body shop. In other words, he would not be generating any income for the body shopper. Which is why the salaries on bench are much lower.
The prospective employees mostly fresh engineering graduates from US universities approach these consultancy firms. They would then give their documents including passport, education certificates etc to the consultant. The consultancy firm charge them an initial fee of around 2000 USD which is used to file for their H1 visa by the consultancy firm. Before filing for visa the consultancy firm makes the them sign contracts. The body shop will apply to the Immigration and Naturalisation Services (INS) for validation and the allotment of H1- B visa. The H1-B visa will be sent back to the consultant or the candidate directly. And once it gets approved they becomes an employee of the consultancy firm. The candidate will be kept on the payrolls of the body shop on a project basis. Their H1 work visa will be sponsored by the consultancy firm and if someone shows poor record in interviews the firm will opt for a new employee. (http://www.onesmartclick.com/interviews/boddyshoppers.html)
Says one IT professional in the US: ” few companies have the skills or talent technically to take advantage of first time H1 holders. They have no well-defined HR policies and sometimes they do not pay salaries if the employee is unable to get a project here before a certain period. Further they might keep a large chunk of profit to themselves and don’t always pay the employee very well. Sometimes they ask for a bond for specific number of years before they sponsor the H1″.
http://www.theindianprogrammer.com/issues/a_balanced_view.htm
This is where the saga begins, once the contract is signed the employee is trapped under various clauses in the contract. The consultancy firms are very open about their effort to prevent employees from abandoning the ship. They make clauses which require the employees to pay hefty fees often over 50000 USD in damages if they break the contract.
Rarely some employees have succeeded in fighting back against restrictive clauses in contracts.
In a rare victory for skilled foreign workers, a San Mateo County Superior Court judge has ordered a Bay Area consulting firm, Compubahn, to drop restrictive clauses from its employment contract, including one that demands a $ 25,000 fee from employees who leave to join the firm’s clients.
While top H-1B engineers and scientists get recruited directly by big companies like Oracle and Intel, many others wind up working for job shops under punitive “non-compete” agreements.. Usually, H-1B visa holders are too worried that their employers will send them back to India to challenge the contracts But Dipen Joshi was different. (http://www.isn.org/news/20010409173255.html )
Either the consultancy firm or sometime the employees themsleves will hunt for projects from software firms. When a consultancy firm plans to apply for a project work they ask their contract workers to modify their resume to suit that particular project and ask them to train themselves in that particular field so that they can perform in interviews.
Mohan Dubey of Seattle says they provide the wrong information in my resume which resulted in me getting almost fired from my job and my discrimination.
Then the consultancy firm send their resumes to the software company and the company after interview may select some lucky ones. The unlucky ones will wait for the next project work the firm may try, again the story continues, they change their resumes, to suit that job undergo short term crash course to get some basic idea on the specified field. During the period of job hunting most of the contract workers are not paid any form of salary.
“I came to US in February 2001 with promises from employer saying Ill get a job in spite of asking him several times that the market is too bad He had assured me a salary of 70000$ per annum

1841 English Census – Englands First – Now Online
Posted in: Real Estate | Comments (0)
(PRWEB) April 13, 2005
These are exciting times for genealogists and family historians. Hot on the heels of the 1861 census, the earliest name-inclusive census of England is now available on British Origins at http://www.britishorigins.com While the ancient Egyptians and the Babylonians were conducting censuses long before Joseph and Mary returned to Bethlehem for the census there, England had to wait till 1841. English genealogy researchers who had previously to scroll through miles of microfilm can now, with the click of a mouse, take their family trees back another couple of generations.
People are becoming more and more interested in how their ancestors lived – what they did, what the social conditions were like – and are increasingly aware that they need to look beyond birth, marriage and death records. Census records dont just allow you to put family units together – parents, children, and other relatives – but identify servants, and give occupations. So you get a picture of peoples lives from their occupations and the type and number of servants, eg personal maid, housemaid, upper floor maid, cook, groom. Rat catchers and lamplighters are in stark contrast to the professions of today.
Researchers using the 1841 England and Wales Census can unveil the lives of prominent figures from this period, such as John Russell, more commonly known as Jack Russell who created the self named famous breed of dog.
Jack Russell, a parson in Swimbridge and also a keen Devon huntsman, was pre-occupied with the idea of creating the perfect hunting dog .When he was given a dog whilst studying in Oxford, he bred it with a Devon hunt terrier and the Jack Russell terrier breed was created (also know for some time as a Parson Terrier). His entry can be found within the Devon records of the England and Wales 1841 Census.
The Origins Network, specialists in British and Irish genealogy, provide exclusive access to a rich and growing collection of records which put flesh on the bones of ones ancestors. These include a unique collection of apprenticeship records, which identify the apprentices father or mother, where they lived, what their occupation was, to whom and where the apprentice moved, and the trade into which they were apprenticed. There were a surprising number of women apprentices entering many different trades, including tilers and bricklayers, armourers and braziers, founders, fletchers and pin makers.
Many of the records tell true and personal stories. Applications for militia service are particularly rich. The 1904 application of John Byrne, of Clonmel, Co. Tipperary, to join the South Tipperary Artillery tells us, under next of kin, that he had a brother in Plymouth, Devon, two sisters in Chicago, and three sisters in Queensland. The 1894 application of Joseph Hogan, of Liverpool, who joined the Royal Lancaster regiment, informs us that he was born in Hyderabad, India, was a musician who had worked or studied with a Mr Heintzman in Toronto the year before, had served in the Derbyshire Regiment for 12 years before that (so had clearly been boy soldier), transferred to the Wicklow Artillery militia in 1895, and bought himself out of a 6-year engagement in 1897. (Was this to get married?). Joseph was 5 ft 5 in tall, weighed 133 lbs, had a chest measurement of 34½ inches, fair complexion, dark blue eyes, and light brown hair. Truly putting flesh on the bones.
Wills are a well-known source, and British Origins provides exclusive access to some of greatest UK sources. Wills provide information on the kind of property your ancestors owned, how much money they had, who they left it to. For example, Robert Goodwins 1803 will showed that he left money to three illegitimate daughters, by two North American Indian mothers, and to an illegitimate son. The 1731 will of Nicholas Foster, of Riccall, Yorkshire, was signed his mark, indicating that Nicholas was illiterate. He was not a well-off man, leaving only a guinea each to his four children, Thomas, John, Anne and Suzanna, and everything else to his wife, also Suzanna.
A further new addition to The Origins Network, an index to petitions to Trinity House for charitable aid by disabled seamen or their widows, provides access to an extraordinary amount of genealogical information. The petitions, covering the period 1787 to 1854, give a career history for the seaman, names and ages of his dependants, and other documents typically including baptismal and marriage certificates. For example, Emily Darnells petition of November 1851 shows that her husband, Thomas, went to sea aged 10, serving for 24 years, lastly as master of the 113 ton coasting vessel Caroline, before being lost at sea in the Gale of 25 September, leaving 5 children under 14 years: Thomas (10), Emily (9), Elizabeth (5), Harry (3) and Ann (1). Accompanying documents include baptismal and marriage certificates, the latter showing that Emilys father, James Artis, of Warntham, was a bricklayer, while Thomass father, William, was also a Yarmouth sea captain; strangely, Emilys birth certificate gives her fathers name as Joseph Artis. Many of the seamen fought or were taken prisoner during the Napoleonic Wars.
Put together all these records and we have, not just names on a piece of paper, but the beginning of bringing our ancestors back to life. However to make the picture even richer British Origins is augmented by a wonderful gallery, containing rare 19th century books, photographs, maps and gazetteers.
In addition to British Origins, The Origins Network also offers unique Irish genealogy collections via Irish Origins (http://www.irishorigins.com) including census records, wills, military papers, Irish/USA emigration boat passenger lists, town plans, and more, as well as an Irish gallery featuring books, photos, maps and other rich vintage material from Ireland.
With all this information on line it is increasingly easy to make your ancestors become real people. We can build up a legacy to pass on to future generations from our armchair.

(PRWEB) November 3, 2005 – Preface to Strife -
The lava of the volcano on which the world sits is the disaffection the Musalman nurses towards the kafir. Its chemistry world over is the Islamic religious rigidity compounded in India by the Hindu historical hurt that is catalyzed with the political expediency.
The Indian landscape is dotted with many of its earlier eruptions but the one in Godhra alarmed everyone as never before. That a fanatical band of Musalmans should dare torch their Ram Sevaks in a railway coach seemed to the Sangh Parivar like Saladin crossing the Lakshman Rekha. Of course, that the neighbourhood Hindus joined the hysterical mobs to burn their persons and property was beyond belief to the ghettoed Mohammedan. The prospect of the new Hindu reality spoiling their party was something galling to the secular politicians, but for the idiot boxwallahs all this was the godsend ‘breaking news’.
However, for the political commentators and the television panelists it provided yet another chance to score a Brownie point or two into the Indian secular goal. And the intelligentsia ever shy to stare at the problem straight would like to push it under the carpet only to repeat the lament at the next turn for that is the cyclic character of the Hindu-Muslim riots. However, the politicians of all hues, alive as they are to every opportunity that presents itself to consolidate their constituency wouldn’t leave the scene and continue to stoke the communal fires to keep the electorate warm.
The problem with a problem is that until one admits that it exists, one cannot address it, and unless it is addressed, it persists. Make no mistake there is this Musalman- kafir problem for the world to contend with, and the Hindu Muslim disaffection is but its Indian edition. The secular sophistry has it that all religions are tolerant in their fundamentals and that all human beings are peaceable but for a few misguided fanatical elements on either side of the communal divide. But the ground reality is that the Hindu ‘common man’ feels that Musalmans has a diseased mind afflicted by sharia fever with the symptoms of Islamic ignorance. The Muslim compliment to the Hindu is the contemptuous kafir who is destined for hell, and all that goes with it. It is owing to our glossing over these entrenched misgivings that we let the communal lava erupt periodically.
This book seeks to outline the background of the Musalman – kafir animosity on one hand and the Hindu ? Muslim communal divide on the other, both products of one or more of the scriptural notions, religious dogma, medieval history and modern politics, or all put together. As one cannot understand man unless he understands his religion, so the religious ethos not only of Hinduism and Islam but also of the Christianity, the Judaism and the Buddhism are sketched here for the reader to understand how scriptures by themselves could contribute to social discord. Also since man carries the historical deadwood, in spite of himself, the history that connects and disconnects the Semitic religions and which divides the Hindu – Muslim emotions is recalled to appreciate the background to the communal strife.
After all, there is more to religion than meets the eye, and that is the overriding faith and feeling of the believer. Besides, as the Islamic creed is more so a product of Muhammad’s persona than the other Semitic faiths were, the influence of his character in shaping the ethos of the Musalman has been analyzed. Won’t the Muslims themselves concede that their endeavour would be to follow the straight path of Islam as earnestly as they could, as others have, any way, strayed onto the satanic path? It is this mind-set that makes Muslims apart in the religious sense. How could this possibly govern the Muslim psyche is theorized in this book by fusing the information gathered from Roland E Miller’s,’Muslim Friends ? Their Faith and Feeling’ with the psychological aspects of Parent, Child and Adult, propositioned in I’m Ok ? You’re Ok, the famous work of Thomas A. Harris
All this might not only enable the Hindus and ‘the others’ to appreciate the Muslim constraints but also understand their own aberrations. Likewise it could be hoped that the Muslims too would ponder over the grievances of the Hindus and ‘the others’ as well as their own afflictions that are behind the Musalman – kafir confrontation.
